A relaxation splint is a custom-made dental appliance used to reduce stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), relax the chewing muscles, and protect the teeth from wear. It is most commonly used for bruxism (teeth grinding), muscle tension, jaw pain, headaches, and bite disorders. The splint is made from a transparent or semi-transparent biocompatible material based on individual dental impressions or digital 3D scans of the patient’s teeth. Thanks to its precise fit, it is comfortable to wear and does not interfere with sleep. Most often, a relaxation splint is recommended for nighttime use, though daytime use may also be advised depending on the indication. The main function of a relaxation splint is to evenly distribute chewing forces, reduce pressure on the joints, and prevent uncontrolled clenching of the teeth. This helps relieve pain and muscle tension and protects the enamel from cracks and wear. Before fabricating the splint, the dentist performs an examination, analyzes the bite, and, if necessary, carries out additional diagnostics. After fabrication, the splint is fitted and adjusted to achieve maximum comfort. A relaxation splint is an effective, non-invasive method for the treatment and prevention of functional disorders of the maxillofacial system and significantly improves the patient’s quality of life.
